VAT Legislation Change

On 29th July 2024, the UK government announced that it would be extending VAT (Value Added Tax) to Independent Schools, meaning that private schools will be subject to paying 20% tax on all fees charged for educational provision. Whilst UK boarding schools have not yet had the opportunity to disclose how this will affect their fee structures in any great detail, this will likely lead to increased fees for both domestic (including Bermuda) and international students, although the increase will probably be greater for the latter.

Registration and Deposits: Most schools require a non-refundable registration fee upon application, and an acceptance fee upon arriving at the school. Eton, for instance, charges a non-refundable £400 registration fee, as well as a £3200 school acceptance fee, of which £500 is returned upon each boy leaving the school.

Uniforms and Clothing: Boarding schools typically have strict uniform policies. Students will need uniforms for the school day, as well as additional kit for extracurricular activities and sports. Since most schools offer sports for different seasons in the academic year, you will need at least three sets of kit for this, including appropriate footwear. Visas and Travel Documents: Student visas to the UK, lasting two years, cost £490, and you can apply for them from six months’ before the start of your child’s arrival at the school. In addition, students are subject to the Immigration Health Surcharge, which costs £776 per year and grants access to the National Health Service.

Guardian Services: UK boarding schools often require international students to have a UK-based guardian. This individual acts as a local contact and provides support throughout the year.exclamation Guardian services can cost around £1,500 to £3,000 annually.

Total Costs:

Considering all the above expenses, the total cost of sending a child to any UK boarding school from Bermuda will be at least £50,000 per year. For top private schools, this increases to between £60-70,000 per year.
