ADHD learning support in Bermuda

What is ADHD?

ADHD, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by ongoing patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that significantly affect daily activities and development. Children with ADHD often face challenges with maintaining focus, organising tasks, and sustaining attention. Hyperactivity can manifest as restlessness or difficulty remaining still, while impulsivity might lead to quick decision-making or interrupting others. ADHD varies in severity and presentation and can continue into adulthood, though symptoms may change over time.

Support for Children with ADHD in Bermuda

Children with ADHD often struggle in a normal school environment due to being misunderstood by teachers and peers. Thus, specialised support is important. There is, however, relatively little support available to children with ADHD in Bermuda. There is currently just one school which caters specifically to children with Special Educational Needs, the Bermuda Centre for Creative Learning. This school has limited capacity, and only enrols students between the ages of 6 and 14. For the critical 14-16 and Sixth Form years, there is no dedicated provision for children with SEN needs on the island.

Educational Options for Those with ADHD in Bermuda

There are two primary educational pathways for children with ADHD in Bermuda:

Traditional Schooling

It is certainly possible to educate children with ADHD within the traditional schooling system, and indeed this is often done. Some parents may prefer to do so, on account of the greater social opportunities available for their children. However, larger class sizes and differing needs within any one class often divides teacher attention, meaning that your child may not receive the specialised instruction that they need to be successful. Since GCSE examinations require the student to learn a much larger amount of content than during the preceding KS3 curriculum, it is important that tutors are able to dedicate their full attention to facilitating this in view of the individual needs of the student.

Homeschooling

Homeschooling is able to provide in almost every area in which traditional schooling is deficient. Pedagogy and practice within homeschooling has transformed it into the best option for children with SEN needs, especially in contexts such as Bermuda where there is little dedicated support available in terms of special SEN schooling. Homeschooling tutors can make effective use of ADHD-specific teaching strategies such as ‘chunking’ and ‘dual-coding’, as well as personalised instruction which enables the student to encode knowledge in a way that suits the strengths of their learning style.
